[K. T. Tsoong Letter, Jan 6, 1909]
Jan. 6, 1892Dr. Allen
I was made glad this evening when our negro - boy brought in your kind letter_dated Dec 10. I was more glad because this was the first letter I received from China since I left there.
In your letter, I noticed you say my postal (Japan) was written on the 20th but not mailed till the24thI think my friend failed to mail it promptly_ or perhaps the mail was not made up till they were ready to sail for Shanghai. That friend whom I met on the Japanese str. was a stranger

to me. I have never met him before — and had never known him. He looked like a Japanese, because he wears no cue and brought with him his Japanese wife and child. Then you know every passenger in the str. tried to introduce himself to others. I introduced myself to him when I found he was going to Yokohama— and thought I would have some help from him. Indeed I received many helpful ways from him although he was a stranger. He told me he is a Chinaman, but he had been to Japan since he was a child and so he adopted their costumes &c. He invited me to stay at his home and treated me kindly

and warmly.

go out this week. During my sickness Mrs.Candlerso kind to me. She sometimes sent me some good_ dinner sometimes some fruit and c. Every time I go there she gave me something. Bro. Yün took dinner at Dr.Candler's house on New Year Day and we had a large turkey. By the way I must tell you the unexpected present which I received on Xmas eve. I went down to the church with some some boys in the hall desiring to see the Xmas tree and the children. After the Xmas service ended. Dr. Moore's brother dressed in a funny way and gave us a funny talk. After-wards they distributed the present according to their names

written on that. Soon after I heard some Chinese name and I thought it was mine. I went up and saw it was my name it was a little package. When I opened my little package I found a nice pearl-scarf-pin with a card written on to Mr. Bell from Mrs. Candler. I was so glad because I didn't expect to get any.
Emory boys treat me very kindly and brotherly like way. The boys in the Marvin Hall treat one so kindly that I cannot express to you. My roommate, Bro. Thompson, is a very religious young man and helps me anyway he can. Some boys says they like to go with me to China to preach. Last Friday was our Y.M.C.A prayermeeting

and I said something about how China needs more missionary. Some of the boys just could hardly keep their tears from flowing out. Yes, I will try to be very useful on that line.
As to our literary society I have not join yet, because I could not go down last Saturday morning. Many Phi Gamma boys come to me & want me to join theirs; and, when the Few come and say join ours. I really dont know which to join. But I think I'll join the Phi Gamma and Bro. Yün is a Few and it would be equal to have one on both sides.
I suppose I wrote you in my last letter that when I was in San Francisco, I did not go

to see Dr. Hannon for I was told by Mr. Masters that Dr. H had left there a long ago. But I went to see Bishop Fitzgerald and he wasnt there either. I was told he has removed to Nashville Tenn I think I will write him a letter and send him my introducing letter at the same time.
My letters is rather too long and if I dont stop I am afraid you will think it like Tennyson's Brook which runs on forever. I will therefore bring it to a close with love to all and to yourself.
I amyours affectionately,
K.T. Tsoong
